Tips to get better at UI design

No designer becomes great working in a silo.
To develop our design skills, it’s essential that we develop an eye for great design.
You need to look at many examples to spot the ok, from the good and the great.
You need to identify why something works and why something doesn’t.
The only way to train your eye is to immerse yourself in design.
Watch this short video with visuals as I walk you through the tips:
Tips for developing your design eye
Tip #1
Break down others’ designs you like. When it comes to analyzing a website, look at the following:
Colour
Balance
Typography
Consistency
Accessibility
Tone of voice
Graphic elements
Layout
Tip #2
Pay attention to the details. The devil is in the details.
Tip #3
Put your eyes into practice. Design fake projects to practice what you observed. Pick a website or app that needs a little bit of love, and redesign it.
Tip #4
Find design inspiration on the web:
Tip #5
Look at website and portfolio builders as well:
Tip #6
Don’t limit yourself and your inspiration to websites only. Inspiration can be found, e.g. outside of web design, in nature, in architecture — a leaf, a flower, a plant, wave, a door, an arch, a bridge.
Tip #7
Design is all around us. Look around you, and look at things with a design lens, e.g. magazines, paintings, packages, logos, advertisements on a bus.
